Median Income in Tacoma Represented by Elevation

Tacoma_Income_Legend.PNG

Starting with a data set of Washington State census block groups, I joined a Pierce County median income table to obtain a Pierce County median income by block group shape file. All block group features were then converted into points. Pierce county was then clipped by to the Tacoma boundary which was then interpolated into a raster by inverse density weighting (IDW) interpolation.

Moving the raster from ArcMap to ArcScene I used the median income field as the z axis for the elevation of the map, and based the height of all the layers to the Tacoma median income layer.

The highest median income peak that can be observed in the North East Tacoma neighborhood around browns point.

SouthEnd_Low.png

The lowest median income sink that can be observed in the East Tacoma Neighborhood towards the East border of the map.

NorthTacoma_High.PNG

The second highest concentrations of median income that can be observed in the North End of Tacoma. Contrasted by clustered sinks in the former Hilltop neighborhood which can be observed below.
